Forum: GratefulDead Subject: TJI: Duke'82: Listen to Brent's scat on Little Red Rooster!

Brent was really on this night [-& it has my favorite version of my favorite song =the OTHER One].

...but I digress:

How 'bout other *good* GD examples of scat (that is, "singing jazz; the singer substitutes nonsense syllables for the words of the song and tries to sound like a musical instrument" not excrement)?

I know that there were time when Brent pulled it off nicely, & other times when Jer or Bob forgot the actual works & 'scat' came out (LOL), or Keith nodded off in mid-phrase. Who else-Pig, Donna?

Perhaps my favorite Brent moment, check out It's All Over Now.

Dat's what I'm talkin'bout!

Again, 1st show of the spring east-coast tour, and again I was there. I've always focused on the Scarlet-Fire, which is my favorite. Thanks for the posting the link for ready access for us all....
Peace

Jack, I humbly suggest including a link. Here is yours:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1982-04-02.nak700.wagner.miller.112822.flac16

While I didn’t go to this, nor this next night in Virginia, I managed eight shows on this tour. Not much of a Little Red Rooster fan, although I won’t deny the glorious addition Brent makes, and thankfully Jerry has the steam to remedy Bob’s labors with the slide. Outstanding OO. However much folks continue to complain about Jerry’s voice or whatever during this time period, he played the shit out of his guitar. And we danced on.

I clicked Billy D’s link, and greatly enjoyed revisiting the Hampton ’84 show
This has to be my favorite Day Job, and marks the first committed tour journey I undertook. Paved the way for the next many years of my life.
As you guys have suggested, Brent’s efforts in All Over Now are not to be missed. The Bird Song is pay dirt to those who can stand it, and who could resist a rousing Hell in the Bucket. Speaking more from the dancing while at this show perspective, not necessarily promoting any grandeur in the listening to Charlie’s fine version here tonight. :)
Certainly things are very copasetic all around when the second set begins – Everybody’s playing in the heart of gold band.

If you’re reading this and wanted a good starting point that will NOT disappoint, begin at @ 6:30 in Scarlet and stick around for a little bit, and then tell us that this band was no good in 1984.

Anyhow, back to your thread, I wouldn’t contend that he was better than ours boys or anything, but Louis Armstrong sang some pretty seriously awesome scat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksmGt2U-xTE&;feature=related

Louis speaks for himself. There are few among us who could claim such an abundance of grace.

Myself, I would like to thank you for taking some little time off. Please feel free to try it again and again.

In an effort at human decency, I will add a

Brent really hit his stride right before his passing. While some, or most, of his songs were suspect and fall into the crowd downer/run to the bathroom variety. The original songs I really like of his were;

There's 7/27/82, in the PITB, though it's a bit more like squeeking than scatting.

And your fave TOO is a stunner. If anyone has a Top 10 list of 80s TOOs, that could definitely be on it.
